Augustine and Heidegger on Verticality and Everydayness

Abstract The first part of the article examines how Augustine’s notion everyday is mediated by his mystical ascensions, which give him sense height against everydayness appears as oriented downward or fallen. These are coordinates that make up fundamental verticality view. Heidegger’s understanding was influenced Augustine, particularly its inherent tendency to fall. In article’s second part, it argued Heidegger explicitly avoids all references metaphysical religious heights. For reason, falling problematic both invokes and abandons verticality. Arguably, turning from horizontality comes with a cost, must renounce possibility conceiving radicality fall perspective above. However, final shows, Augustine do not only provide view falling, but they share conviction there more it: speaks enigmas rooted in itself, which, however, point above, toward overlooked Being; ordinary events traces wonder lowly transcendence God.
